What To Do in Brussels, Belgium (In One Day)

If you’re anything like me, you can’t waste a trip to Europe and only see 1 country. Lucky for you, getting around Europe is easy, especially from Paris, France. Brussels, Belgium, is just a short train ride away, offering a delightful mix of culture, history, and culinary delights for a perfect day trip. Here’s a curated itinerary based on my recent adventure to help you make the most of your day in Belgium.

Getting There

Start your day early by booking a train ticket aboard the Eurostar from Paris’s Gare du Nord station. The process is straightforward, akin to using public transport in Paris. The approximately 2-hour train journey goes quick, and is perfect for catching up on some sleep, reading, or just vegging on your phone. Make sure to bring snacks and water!

Exploring Brussels

Upon arrival in Brussels, don’t be deterred by the initial appearance of the train station; it’s not indicative of the city’s charm. A 20-minute walk from the station leads you to the stunning Grand Place, a must-visit with its picturesque courtyard adorned with golden accents, chocolate shops, and breathtaking architecture.

One of the best places to find chocolate shops is the Les Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert. This mall has chocolate shop after chocolate shop, and is perfect to sample many different locations. We spent a long time here trying to decide what to bring home to share!

The weirdest thing you can do in Brussels is visit the Manneken Pis statue below the Grand Place. This fountain is almost exactly what it sounds like, and I’m not going to spoil it for you. There are also several other Pis statues around town, so take some time to find them!

The Place Ste. Catherine is a beautiful chapel that you must visit! Take a moment in this gorgeous building to relax and ponder the best parts of your trip.

Delights of Belgian Cuisine

Indulge in the quintessential Belgian experience with a stop for authentic Belgian waffles. There are lots of places to purchase these delicious treats, and you will not be disappointed with ANY. Be prepared to be sugared out, because the entire city is made up of waffles, chocolate, and crepes.

If you do reach the point of no more sugar, Belgium is known for its frites, which are similar to American French Fries. They are much thicker, and taste like deep friend mashed potatoes… a definite must eat!

In the Grand Place, there is a Ghirardelli chocolate shop that serves chocolate covered strawberries. They are so fresh and delicious, and a perfect way to eat some healthy chocolate.

The Giant Wheel

Take a spin on a Ferris wheel (titled the Giant Wheel) for a panoramic view of the city, offering a unique perspective and a touch of adventure. This unique experience offers insane views, and is only a few Euros.

Consider Taking a Class

For a memorable experience, consider joining a chocolate-making class or a waffle-making session. These hands-on activities not only offer a taste of Belgian craftsmanship but also provide an opportunity to mingle with locals and fellow travelers. This was my absolute FAVORITE part of our time in Belgium. We took our class through this company and it was so much fun. Not only do you get to learn the art of making chocolate, you also get to take it home!

Tips & Tricks

Keep in mind that public bathrooms can be tricky to find in Brussels, so plan accordingly with your stops. Most restaurants have them, but it’s respectful to order something before using.

Most of Brussels doesn’t open until 10am, so if you’re considering taking the train, plan on arriving a little before then if you don’t want to waste any time.

As your day winds down in Brussels, take a moment to soak in the blend of experiences that made your quick getaway from Paris so special. From the grandeur of the Palace to the deliciousness of Belgian waffles and chocolates, each stop was a taste of the city’s unique charm. Whether you were enjoying the view from a Ferris wheel or getting hands-on with chocolate-making, every bit of your adventure added a splash of fun and discovery. So, as you say goodbye to Brussels, carry with you not just memories but a newfound love for this vibrant city—a perfect escape full of surprises and flavors waiting to be explored again.

Cheers!
